Exercise, heard of it? I sure have, however like a lot of people I fail to make it a daily routine. Now to clarify, when I say exercise I mean a block of time allotted specifically for activities which stimulate ones bodily functions and origins, such as your heart and metabolism (get your minds out of the gutters people). So by that definition our daily walking to and fro places like the car, office, kitchen, and bathroom, do not count. I am in no way an expert on fitness and exercise (just ask my doughy mid section). However I have read and seen enough studies that tout the benefits of a daily exercise routine to know that it is good for me. I am not here to tell you anything different than anybody else has. I simply wish to rant over societies increasing inability to maintain a healthy workout routine (mostly my inability to maintain a healthy workout routine actually). The point here really is that as people we are stretched to damn thin. Between school, work, maintaining relationships (be them romantic, platonic, sexual or a combination of the three), then trying to fit down time into that busy schedule we just have no hours left in our day. Not trying to win any sympathy here but students have it the worst, (college students, not high school or lower, most of you are still doing the only thing still free in this world and thats loading). At the end of the day or week I, and I'm sure a lot of you just want to sit down turn on some mind numbing television or soothing music or hell just kill some nazi zombies (I alienated some people with that last one), and just turn our brains off to the constant demand for our attention. That being said and however true it may be it still does not take away from the fact that we need exercise. It increases energy levels, it decreases the risk of heart disease, it helps digest our food, and some studies have said it even has a hand in making us more happy. Thats right, money may not be able to buy happiness but it can buy a gym membership and that, according to some "sciencey" people somewhere could make us more happy. So exercise, its good for us but we just can't seem to get a routine down, not enough time in our busy day. Or is there? If we are truly honest with ourselves how much time do we spend on time wasting activities? Now I am aware that not all of us do, but there are a fair amount of you out there. Simple fix for that, log your time throughout the day, if you can find even thirty minutes that your not doing anything productive then you have the time to workout. For those of you who already know you have the time to work out (and remember its just thirty minutes), but are having a tough time making exercise a routine here is a fun fact. If you can force your self to do something for one week straight (and who can't?) then that activity will become habit! Now lastly but not least the ones that just hate working out and think its an unnecessary strain or traditional workouts just seem boring. Guess what? There are plenty of activities that are fun and are in fact exercise: swimming, bike riding, a nature walk, hiking, baseball, basketball, ect. One last tidbit, for you "multitaskers" out there, for every thirty minutes of television shows there are approximately ten minutes of commercials (rip off right?) but if you use your time wisely you could exercise during these commercials, push ups, sit ups and so on. Now lets be honest most of us that still watch T.V. on cable networks and not the internet, do we just watch one thirty minute show? No way! we watch three or four, theres thirty to forty minutes of cardiovascular stimulation right there! Main point, give it your best shot to fit in some form of workout in your daily routine. It will make you more energetic, happier, and take you to, or help maintain a healthy weight.
Come on people! Get healthy, stay healthy, be happy!
